This is a summary regarding several changes that you can expect upon return to in-person learning, such as enhanced safety measures as well as what to expect during a functional closure.
We are committed to ensuring our students can continue to learn as safely as possible in-person by closely following all the measures put forth in the updated provincial guidance for schools that were issued in late December and our district’s communicable disease plan. These measures include continued mask wearing, daily health checks, staying home when sick, a continued focus on hand washing, daily cleaning and disinfecting protocols, limiting visitors to schools, and not having spectators at our events.
** Please know that your attendance is very important and that we are working very hard to help you continue your learning progress while allowing you to grow as young adults with positive connections to staff and peers.

Overview of Enhanced Safety Measures
Omicron Variant is milder but far more contagious. We want to keep the school open, so we are asking for your help again. You’ve all been amazing! Here are the new guidelines:
- All staff and students should complete daily health checks, staying home when sick. If you are feeling unwell, please don’t come to school. Sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever are all reasons to stay home.
- No change to bell schedule
- Mandatory Masks: Students must always wear proper (snug) fitting 3-layer masks while in the building (covering mouth and nose). Come to school with a mask every day (including a spare). If you lose yours, you can report to the office to get one.
- Hand sanitizer should be used by all who arrive in the building and will be available at all entrances.
- Social distance as much as possible...limit your bubble 🙂
- Doors will open at 8:15 - Students expected to go straight to their first class and not congregate in halls and must use the entrance that is nearest their classroom
- In halls, please keep right!
- Between classes, please walk directly to your next class. Don’t hang out.
- Bathrooms have a maximum capacity of 2 people.
- No Locker Access until further notice
- Lunch:
- Students are also encouraged whenever possible to leave the premises at lunch for food.
- Use masks while eating / drinking. Lowering masks to eat or drink is a momentary thing and should not be a sustained period while one finishes their lunch. Please follow this procedure: Lower mask, take in food or drink, mask back up while you chew/swallow.
- Cafeteria service still available with enhanced safety measures
- Youth lounge will remain open for some provided food and support from Youth Care and Aboriginal Youth Care Support Workers.
- See magnetic wall or TV screens for list of classrooms where you can eat at lunch (capacity limits of 15, and students must sign in.
- Gyms will also be open and will be monitored for less than 50% capacity and masks use.
- Stairwells and several other areas are taped off to prevent congregation and account for differences in air filtration and/or space in those areas.
- End of day, leave the building immediately (unless directly supervised by a staff member for a club or team)
- Use the exit nearest their last class of the day.
- Teachers and other staff will escort students on their way out.
- After school tutoring: This program is still running Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afterschool from 3-4pm.
- Clubs may still occur if all enhanced safety measures are followed.
- Sports competitions/practices:
- May take place
- Interschool competition is permitted but tournaments are not.
- No spectators (parents or students) are allowed at this time.
- To enhance fresh air flow by opening windows, many doors and windows may be open. Make sure you are dressed warmly for school (in layers).
Functional School Closure
A functional closure is different from a health authority closing a school due to an outbreak in our school community. If the situation arises that due to staff illness, we have insufficient staff to provide safe supervision of children, or to provide quality instruction for an extended duration.
If this happens, students will need to move to a period of learning from home. This period is intended to be 7 days and materials and support for this time will be provided by the classroom teacher, most likely via TEAMS. We will also continue to safely offer our meal programs in a way that respects this period of home learning.
If you don’t have access to a device at home, you can come into school to use a lab or can arrange ahead of time to sign out an iPad
Sequence of Events:
Day 0 – The day we come to understand that a functional closure is necessary. Admin consults with HR (Fraser Health communication may also occur depending on the context of staff absences).
Day 1 – Teachers establish connections with students and( if necessary) reset student passwords though the HUB (surreyschools.ca). Families who pre-arranged to borrow an iPad will be able to pick them up. See parent email for details.
Day 2-7 – Online learning activities begin

- Instruction during a Functional Closure

- Synchronous (teacher actively instructing/guiding students during regularly scheduled class time only)
- Asynchronous (teacher posts instructions for students to work on that day and is available for clarification & support during the regular class time or throughout the school day)
- Combination of the above
- Day 7 reassessment of staffing levels, anticipation of return to face-to-face learning
